New York Jazz Sextet
Don Jordan's Hard Bop Band

New York Jazz Sextet has been bringing the music of the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers and other giants of the hard bop revolution of the ‘50s and ‘60s to the Melbourne jazz scene since 2003.
The band plays with great fire and precision, channeling the seeming inexhaustible energy of the pioneers and masters. It seemed at times that the original players were stretching themselves to such a degree that their instruments could barely contain the emotions they were trying to express.
We play compositions by Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, J. J. Johnson, Benny Golson and Horace Silver, among others, together with a generous helping of standard songs from the jazz repertoire.
The compositions are so striking and beautiful; there are so many of them; and as they are rarely heard live any more, we feel no need to play ‘originals’ by band members. We want our listeners to experience something like the atmosphere of the New York jazz clubs in which the music was first heard, so that you too can feel the emotion and power of this amazing music.
Luckily we have musicians in Melbourne who can play Don’s arrangements and transcriptions of this music at this level. The current line-up is Brae Grimes (trumpet), Chris Genoux (tenor sax), Don Jordan (trombone), Rory Clark (piano), Paul Bender (bass) and Gideon Marcus (drums).
We would love to play at your hotel, or next festival or club date, or concert, and share this stirring music with you. We have a marvelous, hand-painted backdrop to bring to gigs to enhance the atmosphere of the date.
Please contact Don to discuss your needs, our availability, fees and expenses, and the repertoire you would like from the band.
